ARH 1000 VIS & ART HIST: LEARN TO LOOK
The way we see and interpret visual culture is conditioned by our cultural environment. The work of Visual Studies and Art History attempts to reduce the impact of that conditioning by learning as much as possible about the precise circumstances of artistic production and reception in the past, in order to reconstruct the way the original intended audiences would have seen and understood the visual culture of the past. This course will approach the history of art in a series of thematic units, investigating the nature of "art" itself, the role of the artist, methods of visual analysis, exploring the historical, archaeological and geographic contexts of artistic production and display, the power of place ad patronage, and the embodied, multi-sensory experience of art in situ. The subjects of analysis in this class will include in this class will include objects in Manhattanville's special collections, campus buildings, works in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and New York City architecture. Field trips are required.
