Rose Institute for Learning and Literacy
The Rose Institute for Learning and Literacy prepares practicing teachers to use a phonics-based multisensory approach to literacy and learning, based on the work of Samuel T. Orton. Choosing either an Orton-Gillingham or Spalding focus, students take two 3-credit methodology courses and one 7-credit year-long practicum, with twice-weekly mentoring by college faculty, to practice this methodology in their classrooms. Completion of the coursework provides students with an advanced certificate.
Institute coursework can provide preparation for the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator certification.
Coursework from the Rose Institute can be applied towards Master’s degree in Literacy or Literacy and Special Education, but can also be taken for professional development.
The Institute courses or programs in themselves do not lead to NYS teacher certification.
