ENG 3108 Victorian Novels of Vocation
This course examines the importance of vocation151a call to meaningful work in the world, which sometimes takes the form of a particular profession151in the novels by Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy. We will also attend to other key themes and to evolving techniques of narration, characterization, and description; contextual reading will include brief biographical selections and some criticism. Recommended: ENG 2035 (Victorian Literature). NOTE: This counts as a genre course.
