School of Education Graduate Admissions Policies

  1. Deadlines:  Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.  
    1. There is no application deadline.
    2. Once an applicant submits a completed application and all required supporting material, it will be reviewed for decision.
    3. Incomplete applications may remain in progress for up to one calendar year, after which time they will be closed.
  2. Admissions Decisions
    1. Full acceptance into the School of Education
    2. Provisional acceptance into the School of Education
      1. A provisionally accepted student may register for courses and begin the program at the same time as a fully accepted student, and
      2. Must fulfill particular conditions of acceptance.
    3. Rejection from the School of Education: may be eligible to re-apply.  (See below, “Reapplications,” section IV.a.).
    4. Waitlist
      1. Applicants with lower than a 3.0 undergraduate grade point average (GPA) will be placed on our waitlist.
      2. New York State law limits the percentage of students in this category who can be offered admission to the School of Education. 
      3. The admissions committee will review the waitlist monthly and offer conditional acceptances to otherwise qualified applicants.  
        1. Applicants in this category are encouraged to highlight all relevant experience in their application materials.
        2. Applicants in this category are encouraged to apply especially early.
    5. Doctoral Candidate Offers of Admission
      1. Offers of admission must be accepted in writing.
      2. A non-refundable tuition deposit of $250.00 must be submitted
      3. Deposit will be applied to the first semester’s tuition.
  3. Deferments
    1. Accepted students may defer enrollment up to one calendar year, after which time the application will be withdrawn.
    2. Applicants with closed or withdrawn applications are required to re-apply.  (See below, “Reapplications,” section IV.a.).
  4. Reapplications
    1. Applicants with Incomplete Closed Applications and Accepted Students with Withdrawn Applications
      1. May reapply to any future semester
      2. If reapplication is within one calendar year from the application close or withdrawal date, all previously submitted materials may be re-used.
      3. If re-application is after one calendar year and within three calendar years from the application close or withdrawal date, some previously submitted materials may be used.
        1. Official transcripts may be re-used.
        2. Standardized test score reports may be re-used.
        3. Candidate who reapply must submit the following:
          1. New application
          2. Application fee
          3. Current resume
          4. Updated personal statement
          5. At least one new recommendation letter addressing activities related to the field of education within the last year.
      4. After three calendar years from the date of the application close or withdrawal date, applicants may not re-use any previously submitted materials.
    2. Applicants Denied Acceptance
      1. May re-apply after one calendar year from the admission decision has passed.
      2. Must follow the reapplication process outlined above.  (See above, “Reapplications,” section IV.a.).
  5. Application requirements are subject to change.

Graduate Application Information

  1. The School of Education has a rolling admissions policy.  Once you submit all required materials and take all necessary steps to complete an application to your program of choice, the admissions committee will review your application and render an admissions decision.  Most programs offer four possible starting semesters:  Fall (September); Spring (January); Summer I (late May); Summer II (early July).  The Jump Start Program is an exception and offers start dates in the Fall and Spring semesters only.  To be eligible for our graduate programs, you must have or be in the process of obtaining a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and fulfill additional requirements for international students, and meet other program-specific requirements, as applicable.  Your bachelor’s degree must be complete before you can take graduate courses.  Please see the School of Education Graduate Catalog for details.
  2. Application Materials
    1. Official transcripts
      1. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
      2. Request that each institution attended send your transcript to the following address:

      3. New York State law requires an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for programs leading to New York State certification or license, with a limited number of exceptions possible.  Applicants with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0 will be waitlisted.  The admissions committee will review the waitlist periodically and offer conditional acceptances to otherwise qualified applicants.  These students are particularly encouraged to apply early.
    2. Two letters of recommendations 
      1. Letters should be written and submitted by professional or academic references.
      2. You may not submit your own letters of recommendation.
    3. Personal statement
      1. Approximately two to three pages
      2. Describe your reasons for choosing the field of education as a profession.
      3. Discuss your personal philosophy of education.
    4. Resume
    5. Standardized test
      1. Standardized test of graduate admission required by law for programs leading to New York State certification or licensing
      2. Official score sent by the testing agency
        1. GRE (ETS school code 2397)
        2. MAT (Pearson school code 1470)
      3. Please note that each application is reviewed holistically and test scores will not outweigh other indicators submitted with your application.
    6. Non-refundable application fee of $75.00
    7. Submitted online application
    8. Additional Program specific application materials
      1. Art Education:  Electronic art portfolio for review by the Manhattanville College Art Department.  Please send portfolio to edschool@mville.edu
      2. Educational Leadership (non-doctoral)
        1. Interview with the program director upon completion of the application.
        2. Writing sample
      3. Jump Start: Interview with the program director upon completion of the application.
      4. Music Education: Audition process with the Manhattanville College Music Department.  Please call 914-323-5260 to schedule.
      5. International Students
        1. English language exam 
          1. TOEFEL iBT score of 110 or higher
          2.  IELTS score of 8 or higher
          3. Or an equivalent exam result
        2. A certified translation and/or external evaluation of international credentials to determine equivalency of a United States bachelor’s degree.

Doctoral Application Information

  1. The School of Education has a rolling admissions policy.  Once you submit all required materials and take all necessary steps to complete an application to your program  of choice, the admissions committee will review your application and render an admissions decision.  The doctoral program’s Signature and Higher Education pathways  offer one start term:  the fall semester, beginning in late August.  The doctoral program’s Executive pathway (“All But Dissertation” or “ABD”) offers three start terms:   fall (September), spring (January), and summer (late May).  To be eligible for the doctoral program, you must have a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from an  accredited institution.

      2. Discuss your leadership experiences, your strengths in the role of educational leader, your interest in the doctoral program and what knowledge and skills      you hope to develop in the program.

    8. Leadership Experience
      1. Demonstration of a record of leadership as a teacher, leader, and/or manager.
      2. Two years of administrative experience are strongly preferred.

    11. Interview (upon completion of the application, an in-person interview with the doctoral admissions committee).
  3. International Students: demonstrate English language proficiency
    1. English language exam

Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership Ed.D

Admission to the doctoral program is competitive and it will not be possible to accept all qualified applicants into a doctoral cohort. Doctoral students are mentored and supported by the doctoral faculty and the number of students admitted each year must be strictly limited so that we can provide an outstanding doctoral experience to each cohort.

Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree and a relevant Master’s degree
  • Have at least three years of successful experience in education after completing your Bachelor’s degree
  • Have a record of leadership as a teacher, leader, and/or manager.
  • Administrative certification and 2 years of administrative experience are strongly preferred

Applicants should submit the following credentials to the School of Education Admissions Office:

  • Completed application and application fee of $80
  • Two References and One Nomination Letter
  • A statement of purpose essay
  • Official copies of transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work
  • GRE scores on the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical tests or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores
  • An Electronic Portfolio, or Professional Resume Plus a Work Sample
  • An interview with the Doctoral Committee
