Educational Leadership, EDD (E980)

On June 22, 2010, the Board of Regents of the State of New York approved an amendment to our master plan to authorize Manhattanville College to offer its first program at the doctoral level, an Ed.D. in educational leadership. The purpose of the doctoral program is to meet the needs of mid-career professionals who typically have leadership experience in various educational contexts such as public or private schools, community programs, institutions of higher education, governmental agencies, or in NGOs with major education initiatives. This program builds on Manhattanville’s educational leadership master’s and Professional Diploma certification programs for building level and/or district-level leadership.  Students complete a three-year program of study consisting of 59 credits (including a traditional five-chapter dissertation) that tightly integrates coursework, field experiences, and applied research.  The doctoral program experiences are organized around five themes: leading learning organizations, becoming a sophisticated practitioner-scholar, developing self and others, participating in professional and policy-making communities, and facilitating responsive education programs. The program is offered in partnership with the Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES.

Admission requirements:

Application materials include: 1) EdD Application and Application fee; 2) Current CV or Resume; 3) A statement of purpose essay; 4) A sample of scholarly writing or publication, such as a research paper for a recent graduate program; 5) Three reference letters focusing on leadership potential and scholarly communication abilities; 6) Copies of transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work and official copy of the highest academic degree. For international applicants, TOEFL is also required.

Credit transfer:

Up to 12 credits of post-master level courses taken at a regionally accredited institution within the last ten (10) years may be transferred into the doctoral program. Limited Doctoral Teaching Fellowships and Graduate Assistantships are available to qualified candidates.

Students admitted to Dissertation Completion pathway may transfer as many as 39 post-masters semester credits toward the 59-credit requirement and complete the degree within two academic years or less.

Time to Degree:

Students admitted to the Signature and Higher Education pathways of the EDD program have up to 8 years to complete their degree. Students admitted to the Dissertation Completion pathway have up to 4 years to complete their degree.

Educational Leadership (SBL and SDL) Bridge Program Connection with the Doctoral Program

Manhattanville’s unique Bridge Program enables students in the Educational Leadership (SBL and SDL) program, who are also admitted to the EdD program, to apply 12 graduate credits to the doctoral program. Doctoral students can also apply 10 doctoral credits to the Educational Leadership graduate program, thereby completing certification requirements for school leadership positions while enrolled in doctoral studies.
