Declaration of Major Policy

All matriculated undergraduate students declare their major(s) and, if they so choose, minor(s) by completing the Declaration form and submitting it to the Registrar's Office. Students may declare a major (and minor) at any point after entering the college (see freshman limitations and transfer notes below). All students MUST formally declare a major no later than the published deadline on the applicable Academic Calendar in the second-semester of sophomore year. Additionally, students must use the Declaration form to select a major advisor in their declared program; students are reminded that their major advisor must be a faculty member from the program of interest.

Important Notes:

First-year students who choose to declare a major will continue to be advised by their assigned Academic Advisor in the Office of Academic Advising through the second semester of their sophomore year.

Transfer students entering the College with 40 or more credits are required to declare their major and will have a major advisor assigned to them in order to register for classes; this will allow transfer students to accurately assess their intended date of graduation and focus on a program of study

The Declaration form must be signed by the appropriate division chairperson (or their designee), by the new major advisor in their major program, and by the student. Forms without all required signatures will be deemed incomplete, and will not be accepted.

Prospective undergraduate Education Majors should consult with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Advising in the School of Education for a separate program application. Admission to the School of Education is not automatically granted with acceptance to the College.

CAUTION: Changing from one academic major to another may extend a student’s intended graduation date. Students should consult with an advisor to discuss the requirements of a new major and any potential impact on their intended graduation date before proceeding.

Students declaring multiple majors must designate an advisor from each program.
