ENG.1012 Introduction to Literature and Society in the Age of Shakespeare

Students in this class will explore the worlds of Italy and England in the Renaissance. Beginning with Florence in the 1100s and ending with London in the 1610s, we will think about how influential poets and thinkers of the past conceptualized politics, love, language, gender, and religion. We will also think about how these writers used the themes and models of the Bible and classical mythology to inform their work. Through the study of these medieval and Renaissance greats, students will gain the thinking, reading, and writing skills necessary to succeed in the study of English literature and beyond.
