HIS.2043 History of Communities and Exchanges in The Indian Ocean: The First Global System

This course covers the first world global system centered around the Indian Ocean, and involving principally Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia. The area today is the most populated in the world and also the most volatile, making its treatment essential to understanding today's world. The course will bring together these regions as bound by their relations, common histories and themes that appear across state and regional boundaries, and this from the early history of humankind to today's situation. Students will read the works of relevant scholars throughout history. Topics include: history, trade, migrations, religion, political systems, social movements, and mutual influence.
