HIS.3144 Race and Sexuality in the Caribbean
This seminar explores how sexuality and race complicate our understanding of economic, social, and political relationships in the Caribbean within a global context. Since the Conquest, Caribbean societies have been marked by gender, racial, class, and ethnic inequality. European introduction of slavery, the movements for independence, and the subsequent internal struggles that plagued many Caribbean nations since independence have been informed by US and European political and economic influence in the region. The readings for this course will introduce students to the history of the region and the various theoretical developments pertaining to the theme of the course. Students will explore topics such as labor, marriage, prostitution, racial and sexual politics, family life, LGBTQ rights, violence, and sexual tourism.
