MUH.2235 American Musical Theatre: Then and Now

This course will survey the evolution of musical theatre as a uniquely American art form from its roots in Operetta, Vaudeville and jazz through to present day musicals such as Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, and others. The course will trace historical and social trends that influence musical theatre and will highlight the most important composers, lyricists, choreographers, directors and performing artist of the genre. This course includes archival film and video of some of musical theatre's great performances.
