SPN.3056 Short Stories from Spain

This course uses the Hispanic short story to introduce students to the critical skills needed for reading literature in Spanish. Through a varied selection of short stories by writers as Juan Madrid, Soledad Puértolas, Antonio Muñoz Molina, and Paloma Díaz-Mas, students will compare and contrast themes such as the Spanish social hierarchy, the mysteries of childhood, human psychology and human destiny, among others. The course will stress the plot or the linear progression of the story and will raise analytical questions about the narrative style and message of the short stories.
