HIS.2084 History of Mexico
This course will expand students' knowledge of Mexico's regional identities, state formation, economic struggles, and the push and pull factors that impact immigration. We will explore how regional identities, gender relations, and political and economic struggles informed Mexico's path to independence and subsequent state formation and modernization up until the present day. This includes but is not limited to an analysis of the conflict between liberals and conservatives, Indigenous peoples' struggles over land and sovereignty, modernization, struggles for democratization, the Mexican Revolution, relations with the United States, women's movements, the post-revolutionary state, the rise and decline of the Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI), and recent reformist and revolutionary challenges to the state and neo-liberal policies.
