CAM.4010 Media Research Representation Lab

Media research is essential to understanding trends in the media field. Today there are various for-profits and non-profits that contribute to important media research around representation that is both in front of the camera and behind it. Organizations such as the Media Education Lab, Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, and so much more, demonstrate the importance and significance of media research. This media research lab will similarly explore topics around media representation according to current industry trends as well as student interests. Using content analysis, students will work together to create a research industry report around a particular topic connected to media representation. This could include topics such as: Latiné representation in popular television, transgender representation in popular sports advertisements, women representation in above the line positions, intersectional representation in popular films, etc. In this course students will collaborate as a team to develop the report after researching current industry topics, examining published industry reports, and learning how to adequately develop a quantitative and qualitative content analysis.
