ENG.3057 Hawthorne, Melville, and Poe
This seminar examines in depth the works of Hawthorne, Melville, and Poe, focusing on their shared literary techniques and their relationship to earlier American thought. Through these examinations, the course locates these authors in their artistic contexts, as well as in their works' depictions of spirituality, tensions with the natural world, gender and sexuality, and death. We will also identify these authors' influence on literature, film, and pop culture, thus elucidating their continued significance.
