SPRT.2055 Contemporary Perspectives on Health in Education
The idea of health - how to be healthy or do health - can be inescapable. From school settings to fitness centers to public health, the pedagogical sites from which we learn about and engage with health are plentiful. Yet the messages often remain narrow and even one-sided. It does not need to be that way. Health is a dynamic concept shaped by multiple factors. This course will explore that by examining personal, social, cultural and community factors and topics that underpin and affect perspectives on health in education. This will include exploring the sites (e.g., schools, fitness centers, media) and groups (e.g., teachers, peers, family) from which we learn as well as examining different approaches taken when it comes to teaching and learning about health across educational contexts. Topics will focus on fields related to health and physical education, public health and fitness/exercise more broadly.
