Dyslexia and the Science of Reading, Adv Cert (E510)

Program Overview

The Dyslexia Certificate is designed to empower general and special education teachers with deeper understanding of the research and evidence behind the Science of Reading to help inform the assessment and instruction with their students.  In addition to the theoretical background of the Science of Reading, the program will offer extensive experience in designing and implementing evidence-based literacy intervention strategies in a practicum model. The program builds upon indicators of language-based learning disabilities to guide explicit, structured, sequential literacy instruction (ESSLI to help each child reach their full potential.

This program does not lead to a New York State teaching certification.

The certificate will equip educators with the background and skill set to notice early signs and remediate children at-risk for dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  2. Administer, interpret, and apply literacy assessment data to understand student needs and design diagnostic, prescriptive instruction for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.
  3. Design and deliver explicit, systematic, multisensory structured literacy instruction that addresses phonological awareness, sound-symbol correspondence, decoding, encoding, morphology, syntax, fluency, comprehension, and writing.
