ART.3111 Fashion in Photography
Identity is expressed through our choice of clothes, as well as our choice of friends, groups, ideology and even gender. The course, Fashion in Photography, is an exploration of how we as humans identify ourselves through our style. The concept of identity will be explored visually from selfies to global concerns. Students may use digital, or film cameras to capture images that challenge the way we think about fashion. The class will look at different platforms for showing work, such as Instagram, exhibitions, magazines, books, self-published zines, and photo contests. Through slide presentations and lectures students will develop a broader understanding of how photographers have historically approached the topic of identity. They will be assigned a project based on their individual interests. Critiques will be an essential part of the class so students must bring new work to class on a weekly basis. The course will allow for all levels of photographic proficiency. Instruction on camera functions, both for digital and film cameras, will be part of the curriculum as well as basic editing of digital files in Lightroom and Photoshop. Students wishing to work in the darkroom, must have successfully completed a beginning photography course at Manhattanville. This will be a lab course and students will have time to work on their photographs in the computer lab or darkroom depending on their interests and abilities, however additional lab time will be necessary in order to fulfill the requirements for this class. This is a photography class for all levels of students working with 35mm film or digital cameras. Students choosing to work with film must have previous darkroom experience. This class is not an instructional darkroom course.
