GINS.2005 Human Rights in Comparative Perspective

This course is intended as an interdisciplinary introduction to the concept of human rights that examines the global historical, cultural, social, and political dynamics that have gave rise to the modern discourse of human rights. In addition to studying the intersection between human rights and modern international law, students will also study the challenges and contradictions inherent in the concept of human rights including cultural relativism vs. universalism; advocacy for and enforcement of rights at the local, national, and global levels; and the ethically and politically fraught concept of humanitarian intervention.
