GINS.3005 Global Development
In the last few decades, the international community has made remarkable achievements in the areas of poverty alleviation, education, gender, public health, climate change, and other areas of global development. And at the same time, the global pandemic has led to unprecedented humanitarian crises around the world. This course will draw on concepts, theories, and cases from political science, development economics, and the global development industry to answer the following questions: What is development? How does the relationship between the global North and Global South shape the development discourse and industry? How does individual behavior shape development outcomes? Students will learn development theories and debates, explore development challenges in the global south, and study interventions that have succeeded in the real world. Students will first study the historical and institutional context of development in the global south. They will then learn about the multidimensional nature of poverty and how its various interconnected elements - nutrition, health, education, gender, and geography, among others - create a vicious cycle that can trap families for generations. Students will complete a final research project.
