SOC.2010 Sociology of Yoga

Yoga has existed for millennia, but only recently have sociologists begun to investigate this cultural, spiritual, and physical practice through a critical lens. In this course, students will learn about the history of yoga and its contemporary practice through sociological studies and other social sciences, focusing on gender, race, culture, and power, among other analytic concepts. The course will alternate between traditional classroom learning and yoga, including physical yoga asana practice (yoga poses), meditation, and pranayama (breathwork).
