Health Services
Health Services provides comprehensive evaluation, treatment, and referrals. Health Services is staffed by nurse practitioners and registered nurses. Resources, provisions, and educational materials are readily available to help students maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our staff will work with a student’s primary care physician or specialists for routine matters, common illnesses, and emergencies in order to responsibly collaborate and provide continuity of care. Our Nurse Practitioners are able to prescribe medications and order lab work. Gynecological care and birth control is available. Students are encouraged to contact us with questions or concerns; our staff are warm and helpful.
Health Services is located in Spellman Hall, on the ground floor, G-17. In case of an emergency after hours, please call Campus Safety at (914) 323-SAFE (7233) or contact your Resident Advisor or Resident Director.
APPOINTMENTS
Students email shac@mville.edu or call (914) 323-7277 to ask questions, express concerns, or schedule an appointment. Appointments are strongly encouraged. Walk-ins will be accommodated whenever possible, and always in the case of an emergency. Emergencies after hours will be managed by Campus Safety and the Office of Residence Life. Psychiatric emergencies after hours are assisted by our on-call Psychologist.
CONFIDENTIALITY
**Confidentiality is dependent upon safety. Risk situations are carefully considered and safety is paramount.
**Student medical records are confidential and we do not release records without the written consent of the student with the exception of emergency situations.
HEALTH FORMS
The following documentation is required of any student registered for 6 or more credits at the time of admission to the college: proof of two MMR’s (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and a meningitis vaccination within 5 years (or a signed meningitis waiver). As of August 2021, proof of a COVID vaccine will be mandatory for all students who come to campus. Health forms are on our website (https://www.mville.edu/life/student-services/health-center/forms) and should be uploaded to the Student Health Portal (mville.studenthealthportal.com). Students must submit their immunization records and health forms by August 2 for Fall semester entry or January 1 for Spring semester entry. Student who do not submit their forms will not be permitted to move into college housing or attend classes.
Temporary Medical Leave of Absence (tMLOA)
A student who presents to SHAC with a doctor’s note identifying an illness, injury, condition, or impairment that requires an overnight stay in a medical facility, or continuing treatment by a medical provider that would prevent the student from participating in the typical activities required for academic and campus life would qualify for a temporary medical leave of absence. The continuing treatment condition is defined by a period of incapacity of more than 3 consecutive days combined with at least 2 visits to a health care provider, or one visit followed by a regimen of continuing treatment.
When the doctor’s note is received, the Associate Dean of SHAC will create a retention alert, providing limited information to the student’s professors, who are not permitted to hold the student responsible for the absences incurred as a result of the illness/condition. The student is informed, upon approval of their tMLOA, that they will be expected to contact their professors to arrange a plan for making up missed work.
Should the student’s illness/condition persist longer than 2 weeks, or if the time of the semester makes extending the leave difficult, the student should be made aware of other available options, including Medical Leave of Absence, grade deferrals, course withdrawals, etc. There may also be times when the student’s condition or illness results in the need for an accommodation (or temporary accommodation.) The Associate Dean of SHAC will assist by referring the student to the Office of Student Success and/or to Center for Student Accommodations.
