EDU.5520 Teaching Phonics in a Tutoring Setting
In this course, students engage in Experiential Learning through tutoring striving kindergarten or first grade students. Tutors will receive free Reading Ready training and materials, thanks to a generous donation arranged by the Reading Institute, NYC, and will not have any textbook or travel expenses, but will need a laptop, headphones with microphone, and to have been fingerprinted (~$100). The class will meet in-person and work with their striving readers virtually three times a week. Students will have dedicated class time for planning and mentoring from the instructor to maximize their success as a tutor. Topics for discussion will include professional and ethical behavior and comportment in the workplace, best practices for implementing this high dosage tutoring effectively, etc. Assignments will include preparation, reflection, and developing the ability to describe acquired skills and knowledge to potential employers. Upon completion, students may list Reading Ready Tutor on their resume and will receive the tutoring materials to keep.
