Introduction and Overview

Psychology majors study the science of human behavior and mental processes, focusing on areas that include social, cognitive, abnormal, personality, and developmental psychology. Through the process of inquiry in coursework, independent research, internships, and working alongside faculty scholars, students will use curiosity, creativity and critical thinking to examine theories, perform research, and solve problems. A major in Psychology provides students with a deeper understanding of individuals, groups and cultures. The program also develops strong writing, research and analytical skills, making it highly versatile and applicable to a wide range of career paths. Graduates will be well prepared for advanced study in psychology, law, medicine, business, and education, as well as careers in public service, teaching, communications, human resources, and mental health services.

Students planning to major in Psychology should declare a psychology major early in their sophomore year, if possible. Students are advised not to wait until the end of the sophomore year because many opportunities needed for graduate school begin earlier than the junior year.
