Academic Standing and Satisfactory Progress
Academic Standing
To remain in Good Academic Standing, graduate students at Manhattanville University must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students in the doctoral program must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Students who fall below these GPA standards will be considered not in good academic standing and will be granted a maximum of one semester to improve the GPA. Failure to improve the GPA to the required threshold (3.0 for graduate programs and 3.25 for the doctoral program) will result in the student being dismissed from the university.
In addition to completing specific program requirements, all graduate students must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in order to graduate. Similarly, in addition to program requirements, doctoral students must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher in order to graduate.
Satisfactory Progress (Time Limit to Degree Completion)
Satisfactory progress refers to a student's ability to remain on track to complete their degree within a limited amount of time. Students in masters-level programs have up to five years from the date of matriculation to complete their programs. All matriculated students at Manhattanville University are expected to enroll every fall and spring semester to help ensure satisfactory progress toward degree completion. Though the total credits required to complete a masters program may vary, most students will maintain satisfactory progress by completing at least 3 - 6 credits per term and complete their degrees within 2 - 3 years.
Students who are approaching their time limit to complete the degree should consult their academic advisor or program director to discuss options. A time extension may be granted at the discretion of the relevant school Dean. In such cases, additional courses may be required to update the student's program, as determined by the relevant department, to remain current with industry/discipline standards. School of Education students in teacher certification program must also meet any and all new or revised certification requirements imposed by NYSED.
Doctoral Program Satisfactory Progress
A doctoral student admitted to the Signature or Higher Education Leadership pathways has 8 years from the date of the student’s initial course registration to complete the degree. A doctoral student admitted to the Dissertation Completion Pathway has 4 years from the date of the student’s initial course registration to complete the program. Any student who does not complete the degree in the time allotted for their pathway will be considered withdrawn from the program on the first day of the ninth year from initial enrollment for the Signature and Higher Ed cohorts or on the first day of the fifth year from initial enrollment for the Dissertation Completion Pathway. A student in these circumstances may petition to the program director for a one-time, one-year extension.
After successful defense of their dissertation proposals, all doctoral candidates are required to be continuously registered for a minimum of 2 credits of dissertation phase coursework (EDAD.8190 or EDAD.8152) each semester including (fall, spring, and summer) until they complete the program with a successful defense of their dissertation. Upon a student’s signing an acknowledgement of this requirement, the School of Education will automatically complete this registration and billing. Doctoral students on an approved leave of absence during dissertation supervision will not be automatically registered or billed during that period.
