ENG.2009 Women in Comics
Women have been integral to comics, whether as characters or creators, and yet their presence is often treated as secondary. This course ponders both the nuanced roles of women in a variety of comics and the role of women as comics creators. All primarily written or drawn by women, our readings include autobiographical works, queer fiction and nonfiction, incorporations of Latina and indigenous superheroes into mainstream American comics, girls' and women's manga, and works of fantasy and speculative fiction that explore women's relationships to gender, home, and identity.
