SPRT.2020 The Great Outdoors: Race, Space, Place, and Recreation
The Great Outdoors often conjures visions of pristine trails and expansive mountain ranges for participants to explore and conquer. And yet, this imagination is not a natural construction, but one rife with political, social, and cultural ideas about space, place, and race. In this course, we will examine what historical and contemporary understandings of The Great Outdoors tell us about the relationship between race and outdoor recreation. From hiking to skiing, running to surfing, this course will interrogate the intersection between The Great Outdoors and power, inequality, access, and inclusion within environmental spaces.
