Students pursuing a B.S. in Art must have a minimum of 60 liberal arts credits. Art courses (coded ART) do not count as liberal arts. Students are encouraged to work with their advisor(s) to ensure that non-ART courses taken in fulfillment of degree requirements will count towards liberal arts.
All courses for the major must receive letter-grade evaluations of at least C.
Art Major Requirements
The major in Art consists of 14 courses: 7 Core Courses, 2 Art History courses, and 5 Elective courses.
Electives are designed to build areas of strength and focus on career goals. Students choose one area of study from seven options.
Required Courses
NOTE: Transfer students should contact a member of the Art faculty about the appropriate time for Junior Review.
NOTE: One of the ARH courses must be in Contemporary Art. See list below.
Senior Project
The Senior Project Seminar is a creative effort of some depth and is required for all majors. The student’s area of concentration will bring the student’s skills and understanding to bear in an aesthetic statement reflecting at least the equivalent of a full course of independent work. All Art Majors are required to register for the Senior Project Seminar in the fall and spring of their senior year. Each semester will be valued at 1.5 credits equaling a full 3-credit course. Students will meet with the art faculty approximately eight times per semester for the purpose of field trips, defining the roles of the professional artist, and clarifying the direction and process of their senior art projects. Seniors have a dedicated studio in the Student Center in which to complete their artwork. Culmination of this project is an exhibit at Manhattanville University.

Art Digital Image Requirements
All art majors are required to submit digital images of their artworks as a part of their Art Portfolio requirement. This is done throughout the junior and senior years so that both the students and the Art faculty can have a comprehensive chronology of their aesthetic productions while at Manhattanville University. Students' digital images will also act as the inaugural elements in building a professional portfolio for a post-college art career. As part of the Junior Review (ART.3997), students will show a body of work. This should be part of the student's digital images. Students should aim to have 15 quality images. In senior year, students will take Senior Project (ART.3998), which includes an exhibition of their art works, which also contributes to their Portfolio. By the spring of their senior year, students are required to submit 20 quality images.
