Student Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate the capacity to:

  1. Read texts with literal comprehension and a factual understanding of plot and literary structure.
  2. Identify and discuss the elements of literary style (i.e. to perform a “close reading”) and an awareness of potential layers of interpretive meaning (i.e. ambiguity, irony, symbolism, etc.).
  3. Compare a literary work to other works in its genre and/or its social, political, and historical context(s).
  4. Present acts of literary analysis and interpretation effectively in written form by using appropriate textual examples, logically sequenced arguments, grammatically correct sentences, and sources cited in the appropriate citation format.
