Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the BA in Sport Studies focus on how to study sport critically, understanding its complex cultural meanings and its connection with society.  At the completion of the degree, students should have:

  1. a scientific understanding of the functioning of the human body;
  2. an understanding of theories and research methods appropriate for the critical study of sport, and the ability to analyze and interpret data, including peer-reviewed research and literature;   
  3. an interdisciplinary content knowledge of the field of sport, including the historical and cultural forces that shape sport as well as its relationship to institutions and contexts including media, politics, and the economy;
  4. an ability to apply sport related knowledge to critically analyze contemporary issues in the field, including the diversity of sports experiences as they connect to social class, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, age, and ability, in both U.S. and global contexts;
  5. effective communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to construct substantiated critical studies of sport using primary and secondary source materials.
