EDU.5635 Multisensory Structured Literacy Practicum: Associate Level Part 2

Prior to beginning this two semester, 50-hour Associate Level practicum, the Orton Gillingham (OG) trainee must have approval from the instructor to ensure that they can complete the required hours of instruction with one child who has a diagnosis of dyslexia or extensive assessments that indicate probable diagnosis. In this second semester of the practicum, the trainee must work with the same student as in the first semester of practicum. The OG trainee will need to write a profile of the child based on their assessments of the child at the end of this second half of the practicum. As OG trainees progress through the practicum, they will be expected to teach the concepts learned in class to their student using direct and explicit language, a multi-sensory approach, and being diagnostic and prescriptive with their students. Having completed videos #6 and #7 in the first semester of practicum, the OG trainee needs to video record themselves teaching three 40-60 minute lessons (videos #8 and #9 back-to-back and then video #10) including all parts of the Orton-Gillingham lesson. They will need to submit student work from those lessons and a formal lesson plan including the words and sentences students read and spelled. OG trainees should also write a reflection at the end of each lesson on what they have learned and where future instruction should go based upon the students' successes and failures within the lesson. Once the videos #8 and #9 have been reviewed by the instructor, the OG trainee will meet with the instructor to review areas of concern, answer questions, and determine which skills should be focused upon in future lessons. The plan and video for lesson #10 should take this feedback into account. Once the plan and video for #10 have been reviewed by the instructor, the OG trainee will again meet with the instructor to discuss. OG trainees will also keep a weekly log on Google Drive which will be shared with the instructor. In this second semester of the 50-hour Associate level practicum, OG trainees need to log at least thirty 40-60 minute lessons with their focal student. They should write the date of each lesson, the concept introduced or reviewed, and any comments, questions, or concerns they may have. The instructor will review periodically throughout the semester and write responses. The OG trainee will need to complete an application to the Academy for Associate Level certification as well as two letters of recommendations (these would come from the instructor and assistant who review the lessons). As part of this application, the OG trainee will also need to write a profile of the student and submit three additional back-to-back lessons for feedback. This course addresses Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading set forth by the International Dyslexia Association.
