EDU.5413 Early Literacy: Foundational Skills in Language and Learning

Students will acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to guide the literacy development of young children. They will explore the developmental influences on preschool learning and examine the role of language in supporting literacy development. They will examine features of literacy instructional environments, as well as the teaching of all aspects of literacy acquisition through research-based early literacy activities such as book reading, writing activities using invented spelling, storytelling and children's literature, as well as activities that foster phonemic awareness, phonics skills, word identification, vocabulary skills, and comprehension. Students will consider the role of families in supporting the literacy development of young children. They will also examine methods and materials to support literacy development. Field experience required.
